7Artisans 35mm f1.2 is Lens marketed as lens designed for APSC camera sensors, including Fujifilm, Sony, Canon M cameras. I got Fuji X Mount version and what I can say is that this lens is not for someone who is looking for edge to edge sharpness.
What I mean with that is not just decent or usable sharpness, but rather sharpness at all…
I saw and red few reviews and I decided to get this lens, and immediately all those reviews and reviewers lost their credibility with me since this lens is not what was advertised and what I was told from those people unfortunately. I guess appealing to everything is thing of modern times… Where critics and honesty is not that much appreciated…
Lets start with looks. I like form factor of this lens, build quality and looks. It is just gorgeous.
And now lets continue with what is actually important and that is IQ.
7Artisans 35mm f1.2 lens is not that great option for someone who is looking for lens that is all rounder and that can be used always cause it is not that great in terms of IQ. I am not talking just wide open but stopped down even to f8-f11. It is simply unacceptable and if I am going to bring this lens with me when I go out on a shoot I know that I and 90% of you would be disappointed…
Good news is that center is always sharp even at f1.2 it is usable but real sharpness will come at f2.8 and above. Wich in my opinion could be useful if you are framing your subject in the center or if you are shooting portraits.
If you are going to use this lens for landscapes, cityscapes etc do not bother and waste your time and money.
Lets look at examples that I took while looking for sharpness, vignetting, ghosting, CAs etc.
Unfortunately 7Artisans 35mm is really bad as soon you move from the middle and only at f11 ghosting is gone and that is something that really bothers me. Even if you are willing to stop down to f8, f11, f16 you will not get edges to be usable until f11 and f16 but at f11, f16 you are introducing diffraction and losing sharpness overall.
Fortunately middle is much better on this lens and sharpness is there at f2.8 and that is a bit to swallow since at this point Fuji 27mm f2.8 lens start to sound as better option with auto focus and way better IQ overall.
When it comes to Bokeh or SDOF I will say that it is actually pretty decent and I like the rendering of this lens. At f1.2 it is sorta useful but you will need to stop down to f2 to get best from both worlds in terms of Bokeh and middle sharpness.
All in all this lens is not that great in comparison with some Vintage gems like Canon nFD 50mm f1.4, Konica Hexanon AR 50mm f1.4, Minolta 50mm f1.4 etc. It costs more then all those lenses but have worse IQ. There is almost no sharpness in the corners…
On the other hand I must admit that there is not that much of choice for us and our APSC cameras since all this Vintage glass require Adapters and size and weight goes up.
7Artisans 35mm f1.2 is really fun lens to use and play with but I need to be hones with myself and also to anyone who might be reading this and say that this is a toy lens in terms of IQ.
On the other hand if you don’t mind all those drawbacks and just need something to play with I cant stress enough how cool this lens is and if you can live with it than you will be more than happy. Unfortunately I am coming from Sony A7 II and Tamron 28-75 f2.8 and this is just something that I cant and will not use.
Here are some photos that I took while playing with this lens in the park near us and around beautiful Düsseldorf. I didn’t take it anywhere where I would be sad afterwards seeing photos. It can be fun lens but that is it, do not expect anything from it more than to use it for Instagram, Facebook posts etc since it will disappoint you and you will regret taking it instead of some decent glass.
All those photos are taken at f1.2 and edited later in Adobe Lightroom to pull as much as I could from the RAW files. And some turned out OK. Mostly shots where subject was in the midge of the frame…
Now stopping it down to f5.6, f8 you could get some usable IQ but again I would not rely on this lens but rather on something a bit better.
My conclusion is that if something is not good enough for me than I simply cant recommend it to anyone who is reading this and looking for decent lens and IQ.
Lets finish with Pros and Cons from my point of view.
- Build Quality
- Focusing is Easy
- Center Sharpness from f2.8
- Size and portability
- PRICE of 150€ is a bit too much for this lens
- Sharpness outside of center of the frame
- QC- some of them are DOA (Scratches, dust, grinding mechanism etc…)
- Overall usability
- Vignetting and distortion is really bad
Final notes if someone from 7Artisans come along this review.
You have a gem in terms of form factor, BQ, looks and now you just need to improve this lens optically so please if there is Mk2 version somewhere in the pipeline than please make it better since I would be more than happy to buy one.
